Samantha Stecker “Sam” Otero is Of Counsel at McCandlish Holton, PC. Sam was nominated for the 2014 Benjamin R. Lacy, IV Pro Bono Clearinghouse Volunteer for her work with St. Joseph’s Villa, among other nonprofits and for her dedicated service to the community. Sam has helped eight nonprofits in twice as many matters since 2004. Moreover, she is an active participant in McCandlish Holton’s efforts toward the Pro Bono Promise, a program through the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation, which supports the disadvantaged in our community by encouraging and facilitating the provision of pro bono legal services. Sam has served as counsel to such non-profits as World Pediatric Project, the Legal Information Network for Cancer, Genesis House, Medical Home Plus, Fresh Beginnings, Virginia Public Access Project, Jamestown 4H Education Center, The Daily Planet, St. Joseph’s Villa, Commonwealth Parenting, and the Children’s Museum of Virginia.
Sam represents executives and employers in all aspects of employment law. She has extensive trial experience in federal and state courts across the Commonwealth, and routinely defends management before state and federal agencies in employment-related disputes. As part of her pro bono efforts at the trial level, Sam represented a client of the Legal Information Network for Cancer in an ERISA case involving the denial of health care benefits to an employee with terminal cancer.
Sam advises clients on the requirements they face in the areas of hiring, promotions, layoffs, discipline, EEOC complaints, discrimination, overtime, leave and benefits, and also handles allegations of harassment and disputes arising out of employment contracts, including covenants not to compete. Sam’s pro bono work with St. Joseph’s Villa perfectly exemplifies her nimbleness and depth of experience on these issues. With matters ranging from the review of employment and social media policies to advice regarding a complicated Family Medical Leave Act issue to assistance with discrimination charges at the EEOC level, Sam generously gives of her professional talents.
In addition to her pro bono work, Sam has been an active participant in the community. For three years she served on the Executive Council of the Young Lawyers Division of the Virginia Bar Association. Recently, as President of the Board of Commonwealth Parenting, Sam helped to facilitate a merger between Commonwealth Parenting and the Children’s Museum of Richmond, and she currently serves as the Chair of the Parenting Advisory Committee for Commonwealth Parenting/CMoR. You can also find Sam and her two sons volunteering at BARK, a dog adoption and rescue facility, on most weekends.
