1. Where were you born?
I am from Onancock on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I was born in Nassawadox, VA.
2. Spouse? Children? Pets?
I am a Wahoo and married a Hokie. Somehow, that works for us! We have two grown daughters.
3. What is your occupation? If you’re a lawyer, what type of law do you practice?
Attorney. I am a litigator at Sands Anderson PC, with an emphasis on commercial and governmental clients. I have done pro bono work through CVLAS and other organizations since my first year of practice in 1988.
4. Why did you join the GRBF Board?
I was asked to consider joining after my law partner Ben Lacy passed away. He was serving on the board when he died. The annual pro bono volunteer of the year award is named after Ben, which is something that Sands Anderson is very proud of.
5. What was your favorite subject in school?
History.
6. What was your first job?
Farm hand. I wanted an outdoor job.
7. What is the best book you have ever read?
To Kill a Mockingbird.
8. What is the one item you cannot live without?
There is no such thing!
9. What is your favorite travel spot?
The Hawaiian Islands. Honorable mention: Manitowish Waters, WI; Corolla, NC; and the SW coast of Ireland.
10. What is at the top of your bucket list?
Camping in a dessert while surrounded by stars (celestial bodies, not Hollywood celebs!)
11. What is the best live concert you have ever attended?
Van Halen (Hampton Coliseum) in the early 80’s.
12. What is your favorite movie, TV show, or podcast?
It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
13. What is your favorite sports team?
Miami Dolphins (don’t @ me…)
14. When I am not in the office, I like to …
Spend time with my family, and treasure when my grown daughters come to visit.
15. If I wasn’t a lawyer, I would be …
A newspaper reporter. My Dad co-owned the local paper when I was growing up.
16. What is something most people probably don’t know about you?
I was a state-certified volunteer firefighter during my high school, college, and law school years.
17. At the current moment, what are you most looking forward to?
A world where people can get together without fear of getting sick or making other people sick.
18. What advice would you give someone who wants to become involved in pro bono opportunities?
First, GRBF is a great resource for folks who want to get involved in pro bono. Second, and especially for younger attorneys, letting your law firm’s leadership know that doing pro bono is very important to you is the best way to that the firm will be supportive of your efforts.
